The story of Qabiria
It all begins in a study hall at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, where three former colleagues gather to discuss a future business project, a translation agency specializing in consulting.
It’s been a long road since that distant 2007. We have tackled even very different projects...

Goals achieved
2025
- Qabiria launches Ideomatica, a new brand dedicated to consulting for the automation and integration of business and language processes.
2024
- Qabiria participates in the International eTrade program promoted by Acció, the business competitiveness agency of the Government of Catalonia, to support the international expansion of SMEs.
- Qabiria is selected for Consolida't, an initiative of the municipalities of Badalona and Santa Coloma de Gramenet to help businesses grow, reinvent themselves or consolidate their business model.
- Published online the update of the on-demand introduction to translation project management course for STL Formazione.
- The collaboration with ISTRAD in Seville continues, as part of the Master’s Degree in Translation and Marketing and the Master’s Degree in Translation and New Technologies.
2023
- Sergio Alasia works on the translation of Carrying the Fire - Il mio viaggio verso la Luna, the autobiography of astronaut Michael Collins, one of the Apollo 11 crew members.
- Marco Cevoli participates in the training course in international digital marketing and communication organized by Acció, the business competitiveness agency of the Government of Catalonia.
- Qabiria successfully completes the “Empresa Saludable” program for corporate wellness, organized by the city of Badalona and Reactivació Badalona at the Badalona Centre Internacional de Negocis (BCIN) and aimed at local companies.
- The 30th trainee arrives in Qabiria’s offices since the start of collaboration with various Italian and foreign universities (Sassari, Bologna, Pisa, Barcelona, etc.) in 2016.
2022
- Marco Cevoli is again collaborating with ISTRAD in Seville, giving a lecture for the master’s degree in Translation and New Technologies and the module “Tools 1: CMS systems - WordPress” as part of the master’s degree in Translation and Marketing.
- Sergio Alasia and Marco Cevoli publish a new handbook for translators entitled Galateo per traduttori. Regole e segreti per un rapporto di successo con le agenzie di traduzione, available on Amazon and Gumroad as paperback and ebook (currently in Italian only).
- Qabiria collaborates with Fundación Noelia, a nonprofit organization against congenital muscular dystrophy due to collagen VI deficiency, by translating and subtitling videos from the Collagen VI Meeting.
- Marco Cevoli participates as a speaker at the 10th conference “Il Traduttore Visibile” (The Visible Translator), organized by the University of Parma as part of the European Day of Languages with a paper entitled “Profiles, tools and workflows of a translation company: what prospects for recent graduates?”
- Published the English translation of The Irreplaceable Translator (Translator: Owen Bucher-Flynn).
- For the European School of Translation, Sergio Alasia and Marco Cevoli publish the course “Working with Translation Agencies.”
2021
- For the European School of Translation, Sergio Alasia publishes the mini-course “How to set your translation rates.”
- Marco Cevoli holds two webinars entitled “Checking the quality of translations with free, low-cost or open source tools” for the Lombardy section of AITI, the Italian Association of Translators and Interpreters, then repeated in November for AITI Lazio.
- Marco Cevoli is again collaborating with ISTRAD, for the master’s degree in Translation and New Technologies.
- For ISTRAD, Marco Cevoli teaches again the module “Tools 1: CMS systems - WordPress” as part of the master’s degree in Translation and Marketing.
- Launch of Qabiria’s new website, with two new service lines: those related to multilingual sites (consulting, SEO and web design), and those related to writing (content writing, business writing, copywriting, UX writing).
- In January, the Qalculator is launched, an interactive form for calculating the timing of a translation.
2020
- For the SELM (Spanish Society of Modern Languages), Marco Cevoli presented the webinar “Strategie, strumenti e trucchi per trovare tutto in internet" (Strategies, tools and tricks for finding everything on the internet).
- The Qabiria team once again collaborated on the publication of the ebook Le Traduzioni della Bottega III (Workshop Translations III) , a volume that collects the translations of the students of STL Formazione’s “Bottega on line di traduzione editoriale” (Online Publishing Translation Workshop) course.
- Again for ISTRAD, Marco Cevoli gave the module “Tools 1: CMS systems - WordPress” as part of the master’s degree in Translation and Marketing .
- For the ISTRAD school in Seville, Marco Cevoli presented the webinar “40 strumenti gratuiti (o quasi) e indispensabili (o quasi) per l’arsenale del traduttore" (40 free (or almost free) and indispensable (or almost indispensable) tools for the translator’s toolbox)
2019
- Published Portuguese translation of the book Il traduttore insostituibile (The Irreplaceable Translator) , edited by Rosangela Fasolato
- Marco Cevoli gave a face-to-face course on project management organised in Rome by the European School of Translation
- Help with the publication of the ebook Le Traduzioni della Bottega II (Workshop Translations II) , the second volume of translations produced by the students of STL Formazione’s "Bottega on line di traduzione editoriale" (Online Publishing Translation Workshop) course.
- Participation as teachers in the online course “Becoming Translators", organised by STL Formazione.

- Qabiria awarded as Power LSP of the Year in the Smartling Translator Awards, given by Smartling to its best employees.

- Launch of the smartphone app Allerglobal, for creating information sheets on one’s own food allergies and intolerances (in cooperation with Mr. APPs ).

- Classroom course entitled Localizzazione di siti web: dall’HTML ai translation proxy (Localisation of websites: from HTML to translation proxies) for the European School of Translation in Rome.
- Continued collaboration with the Master’s in Tradumàtica (Translation Technology) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, as a tutor for the end of Master’s theses.

2014
- Participation in the international conference "TeTra3 - Tecnologie per la traduzione" (TeTra3 - Technology for Translation), organised in Forlì by the Department of Interpretation and Translation of the University of Bologna with a speech entitled OmegaT 3.0. Vera alternativa libera e gratuita ai CAT commerciali? (OmegaT 3.0. A genuine free alternative to commercial CATs?) and a workshop on the same subject.
- Participation in the ProZ International Conference in Pisa with two presentations: one entitled Localization: Setting up Multilingual Websites with Content Management Systems together with Andrea Spila and another entitled How to Review your Translation with 2 Free and Open-source QA Tools .
- Participation in La Giornata del Traduttore 2014 in Pisa, with a talk entitled Faccio cose, vedo gente, localizzo siti (I do things, I see people, I localise websites) and a workshop entitled A Translator’s Toolbox: the 10 Must-Have Applications , this last one in collaboration with Andrea Spila.
- Launch of the new version of the Qabiria.com website, with new graphic design and reorganised content; the site becomes fully responsive, i.e. adapts to the device with which it is viewed.

2011
- Drafting of technical specifications and organising crowdfunding for a client portal for project-open, an add-on module for requesting translation quotes.
- First translation agency in the world to officially accept Bitcoin.
- Translation of the MT Post-editing Guidelines developed by TAUS.
- Participation in the 1st European ProZ International Conference in Rome with a presentation How to cover the whole Translation Project Workflow with one open-source system: ]project-open[ .
2010
- Launch of TradHostel, a microsite specializing in translation for the hotel and tourism industry.
- Participation in the Barcelona Startup Weekend 2010, an event that brings together aspiring entrepreneurs, technicians and investors.. From these two days of work, a collaboration emerged with the Spanish version of the Coupies project, an app for distributing discount vouchers.
- First prize in the GlobalSight Community Ideas Contest, a competition of ideas to improve GlobalSight , an open source management system covering all stages of the translation process. The award-winning idea consists of an add-on for the translation of short texts via instant messaging.
- Launch of the mobile-optimised version of qabiria.com.
- Participation in the 3rd ProZ Spanish Regional Conference in Barcelona, around the theme “Practical Aspects of Translation,” with two presentations: Social networking and the translator , in partnership with Rubén de la Fuente, and FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) tools for translators, part 1: translation and quality control .
- Partnership with TAUS , the well-known resource centre for the language services industry, for a study on the compatibility of computer-aided translation tools with open standards.
2009
- Participation in the ProZ Spanish Regional Conference in Barcelona, around the theme “Machine Translation: past, present and future", with a presentation entitled Machine translation and the freelance translator: a difficult relationship .
- Participation in the Austrian ProZ Regional Conference in Vienna with two presentations: The social value of a customized toolbar for translators and project managers and Project management outsourcing: a competitive advantage for both the client and the service provider .
- Opening of a YouTube channel with the best of technical tutorials for translators and project managers.
- Apple Store release of the iFear app, a dictionary of fears and phobias, developed in collaboration with the psychology firm Hippocampo .
- Launch of Allerglobal , a web application for creating multilingual cards for travellers with food allergies or intolerances.
2008
- Formation of the company by Sergio Alasia, Marco Cevoli and Carles Fernández Giua. Business launch as a provider of Italian translations.
- Collaboration as Premium Partner with project-open , an open source project management system, pre-configured for translation agencies.
- Launch of a browser toolbar, which increases translators’ productivity by bringing together dozens of useful tools and links in a convenient interface.
2007

Elaboration of the business plan and start of the project with the support of the IMPO in Badalona (the organization for the promotion of employment and entrepreneurship of the city of Badalona, in Catalonia, Spain).
